Wuzhen and the “Web”: Leading with Intelligence! A Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence

Every year during the global internet’s “Wuzhen Time,” we witness a series of fresh and fascinating “web” marvels: a tiny smart ring seamlessly integrating AI technology with spatial algorithms, enabling precise gesture control with a simple wave of the finger; an “AI + coffee master” efficiently brewing a fresh cup of coffee in just two to three minutes, handling everything from picking up the cup to pouring water; futuristic humanoid robots snapping selfies with tourists and skillfully answering their diverse questions, showcasing impressive conversational capabilities.

This year’s World Internet Conference in Wuzhen has put artificial intelligence at its center stage. “This year’s summit coincides with a period of rapid AI development, with new applications emerging one after another, bringing unprecedented transformations to society and everyday life,” said Gao Rui, Vice Chairman of the World Internet Conference. According to attendees, AI’s potential to empower industries and transform the future is already evident.

“In the past year, numerous companies have been reimagining their products with AI. In sectors like automotive and pharmaceuticals, AI has revolutionized research and production. AI has even initiated a new paradigm for scientific research, profoundly reshaping the global technological landscape,” said Wu Yongming, CEO of Alibaba Group.

Wang Haifeng, CTO of Baidu, highlighted that large models are currently the mainstream in AI development. Their applications, along with intelligent agent technologies, are becoming widespread across industries such as education, healthcare, and agriculture, contributing to improved livelihoods and providing accessible digital services.

This year, the "Supercomputing Internet Platform" project won the Leading Science and Technology Award at the World Internet Conference. Representing the project team, Cao Zhennan, Deputy Director of the National Supercomputing Engineering Technology Research Center, expressed hope for integrating AI with supercomputing applications across various industries and sectors, enabling AI to serve more businesses and individuals.

Participants emphasized the importance of leveraging the internet as a driving force for modernization. They called for embracing the wave of the information revolution by fostering innovations in AI, big data, cloud computing, and blockchain and accelerating the transformation of technological achievements into productive forces.

To this end, this year’s “Straight to Wuzhen” Global Internet Competition introduced an AI+ Innovation Application feature track, attracting over 200 projects worldwide. These projects span various scenarios, such as lifestyle, consumption, and transportation, with distinctive applications in digital culture, intelligent connected vehicles, industrial internet, and AI-powered e-commerce.

As AI evolves rapidly, guiding its development toward “intelligent benevolence” has also become a focal point of discussion.

According to Wu Shenkua, Deputy Director of the Research Center at the China Internet Association, “intelligent benevolence” encompasses three layers of meaning: first, the goal of AI development should be to benefit humanity; second, the application of AI must adhere to principles of goodwill; and third, ethical values and requirements must be embedded in the regulation and governance of AI.

“While driving productivity, AI also brings new risks and challenges in areas like law, security, employment, and ethics,” noted Lin Shangli, President of Renmin University of China. He urged that “good laws” be used to foster “intelligent virtue,” emphasizing the need to solidify the foundation of the rule of law, strengthen interdisciplinary education, nurture high-caliber legal professionals, and enhance international exchanges and collaboration.

“过去一年，众多企业都在用AI重构自己的产品；在汽车、医药领域，AI已经引发了研发和生产的变革；AI还开创了科研新范式，正在深刻改变全球科技格局。”阿里巴巴集团首席执行官吴泳铭说。

百度首席技术官王海峰认为，现阶段大模型是人工智能发展的主流方向，大模型以及智能体技术在教育、医疗、农业等多个行业和领域普及，能够助力保障和改善民生，带来普惠的数字服务。

在今年世界互联网大会领先科技奖的评选中，“超算互联网平台”项目成功获评。作为项目团队的代表，国家高性能计算机工程技术研究中心副主任曹振南表示，期待人工智能与超算领域的应用结合，让AI技术与不同领域、不同行业结合，服务更多的企业和个体。

与会嘉宾认为，要发挥互联网对现代化建设的重要驱动作用，主动顺应信息革命浪潮，大力推动人工智能、大数据、云计算、区块链等技术创新发展，加快科技成果向现实生产力转化。

为此，今年的“直通乌镇”全球互联网大赛创新设置AI+创新应用特色赛，吸引了来自全球200余个涉及生活、消费、交通AI+融合场景项目同台竞技。数字文化、智能网联汽车、工业互联网、AI电商等赛道应用各具特色。

在人工智能快速演进的过程中，如何引导“智能向善”同样成为各方热议的焦点。

在中国互联网协会研究中心副主任吴沈括看来，“智能向善”包含三个层次的意义：一是人工智能研发的目标指向应当是造福民众；二是在人工智能应用的过程当中，应当基于善意的使用原则；三是要将特定的伦理价值、伦理要求融入到人工智能的监管与治理中来。

“在推动生产力发展的同时，人工智能也在法律、安全、就业、道德伦理等方面带来新的风险和挑战。”中国人民大学校长林尚立认为，应以“良法”促“善智”，努力夯实法治基石、加强学科建设、培养高素质法治人才、增进国际交流合作。
