China Completes Manned Deep-Sea Scientific Exploration of Eight Major Global Trenches
At the Second International Conference on Hadal Bio-Geo-Environment held on November 14, it was announced that Chinese scientists have successfully completed manned deep-sea scientific investigations of eight major global ocean trenches. This achievement has set multiple world records for manned deep-sea operations and scientific exploration, resulting in a series of groundbreaking discoveries and scientific findings in the fields of deep-sea geology, biology, and environmental sciences.
In 2022, the Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences initiated the Global Hadal Deep-Sea Exploration Program. This program leverages the Fendouzhe (Striver) manned submersible as its core platform, which is open to international collaboration. The program conducts systematic, multidisciplinary deep-sea expeditions in cooperation with multiple countries. So far, manned scientific explorations have been completed in eight major trenches: the Mariana, Yap, Kermadec, Diamantina, Vityaz-Jenetz, Java, Japan-Kamchatka, and Aleutian Trenches. These efforts have positioned China at the forefront of hadal science and supported its vision of becoming a maritime power.
The Global Hadal Deep-Sea Exploration Program aims to address major scientific challenges such as the origin of life in Hadal environments, geological evolution, and environmental pollution in deep-sea trenches. Since its launch, the program has completed several joint manned scientific expeditions involving China, New Zealand, and other countries.
The hadal zone refers to oceanic regions deeper than 6,000 meters. Globally, there are 37 such trenches characterized by extreme environmental conditions, including high pressure, low temperatures, complete darkness, active tectonics, frequent earthquakes, and unique forms of life. These areas represent the frontier of Earth sciences and marine research, holding potential for transformative breakthroughs.
The conference, hosted by the Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering, brought together deep-sea and hadal experts from 10 countries, including New Zealand, Indonesia, Chile, Denmark, France, Portugal, the United States, and India. Participants focused on topics related to trench geology, biology, and environmental science, fostering academic exchanges and collaborative discussions to advance hadal research and address global scientific challenges.

记者从11月14日召开的第二届全球海斗深渊生物地质环境国际会议上获悉,我国科学家目前已完成八条全球主要海沟深渊的载人深潜科考,创造多项世界载人深潜作业和科考新纪录,在深渊深海地质、生命与环境科学领域取得了一系列原创性重大发现和科考成果。
据介绍,中国科学院深海科学与工程研究所于2022年牵头发起并实施“全球深渊深潜探索计划”,依托“奋斗者”号为核心、面向全球开放的深渊研究平台,展开多国联合、系统性多学科综合深潜考察。目前,已完成马里亚纳、雅浦、克马德克、蒂阿曼蒂那、瓦莱比-热恩斯、爪哇、千叶-勘察加、阿留申等八条全球主要海沟深渊的载人深潜科考,引领国际深渊科学发展,支撑国家海洋强国建设。
“全球深渊深潜探索计划”重点解决深渊生命起源、深渊地质演化、深渊环境污染等重大科学问题,计划启动以来,已完成中国-新西兰等多个中外联合载人深潜科考航次。
据了解,海斗深渊专指海洋中深度大于6000米的深海区域。全球共有37条深渊,以压力大、温度低、黑暗无光、构造活跃、地震密集、生命奇特为环境特点,代表着地球科学尤其是海洋科学中蕴含重大突破的最新前沿领域。
本次会议由中国科学院深海科学与工程研究所主办,共有来自新西兰、印度尼西亚、智利、丹麦、法国、葡萄牙、美国、印度等10个国家的国际深海深渊领域专家学者参与,重点围绕深渊地质、生物与环境主题,开展学术交流与合作探讨,共同探索推动深渊学科发展及全球热点议题。(记者赵颖全、严钰景)
